Why Pet Vaccines Matter

Why Pet Vaccines Matter

Protecting Pets Together—National Immunization Awareness Month at Walnut Creek Veterinary Clinic

August is National Immunization Awareness Month, and while your pet may not love getting shots, vaccines are one of the most powerful ways to protect their health!

At Walnut Creek Veterinary Clinic, we believe prevention is the best medicine. Vaccines safeguard pets from serious (and sometimes contagious) diseases, many of which can spread to other animals and even people. Staying up to date on vaccines doesn’t just protect your pet, it helps protect the whole community.

Why Are Vaccines Important for Pets?

Vaccines teach your pet’s immune system how to recognize and fight off harmful viruses and bacteria before they can cause illness. Some vaccines are core (essential for every pet), while others depend on your pet’s lifestyle, like if they travel, go to the groomer, or play at the dog park.

Here are a few common conditions we can prevent through vaccines:

  • Rabies – Always fatal in dogs and cats, required by law, and can spread to humans.
  • Distemper – A dangerous and often deadly virus for both dogs and cats.
  • Parvovirus – A severe gastrointestinal illness, especially risky for puppies.
  • Feline Leukemia – A contagious virus that weakens the immune system in cats.
  • Leptospirosis – A disease that affects dogs, spread through wildlife and water; can infect humans too.
  • Bordetella (kennel cough) – A respiratory infection common in dogs that socialize.

When Should My Pets Get Their Vaccines?

Vaccines work best when given on a schedule that builds and maintains protection:

  • Puppies & Kittens: Start their vaccine series around 6–8 weeks of age.
  • Boosters: Given every few weeks until about 16–20 weeks old.
  • Adult Pets: Need regular boosters—usually every 1 to 3 years—based on lifestyle and risk.

At Walnut Creek Veterinary Clinic, we personalize each pet’s vaccine plan to make sure they’re protected without unnecessary doses.

Why Pet Vaccinations Matter

Vaccination isn’t a one-and-done deal, immunity can wear off over time. That’s why staying current on boosters and annual checkups is just as important as those early shots.

By vaccinating your pet, you’re also helping protect more vulnerable animals (like young puppies, seniors, or immunocompromised pets) who can’t receive vaccines themselves. It’s a simple act with a big ripple effect.
