Whether you’re bringing home a kitty or a puppy, we have some tips for helping your new furry friend feel safe and welcome.
An anxiety vest can serve as a warm security blanket for pets during the transition to their “furever home.”
Calming chews can also provide fast-acting relief. But the best solution for making them more comfortable in the long run is to establish a consistent routine. This can involve feeding them at a specific time each day, as well as creating a schedule for walks, other fitness activities, bedtime, etc.
Don’t get into the classic bad habit of feeding your pet leftovers from the dinner table. Start them off on a balanced, scientifically-based diet. (We can help with this!)
Shifting from an animal shelter to a home can be quite jarring for a pet. Introducing them to other animals can help ease the transition. For instance, you could take your puppy to a park or bring your kitty to a cat cafe. However, ensure your pet is fully vaccinated before socializing in public, especially puppies, who are more vulnerable to illnesses. Reward your pet with treats or positive reinforcement when they remain calm and behave well during socialization with other animals. But don’t force them into interactions if they seem stressed or aggressive.
This is one of the most important first steps you can take with a kitten or puppy, as it can help them stay ahead of potential health issues. Diagnostic testing and early detection can be vital in delivering effective treatment as soon as possible. Regular wellness exams will help your pet lead a healthy and happy life.
